Who Are We?
Our Background
The Horbury Women's Institute is one of more than 6,000 Women's Institutes in the United Kingdom.
The Horbury WI celebrated it's 10th birthday last year having been formed in 2015.
We are part of the West Yorkshire Federation WI, which is a bit like a regional office looking after a group of local WI's.
There are 70 Federations across the UK and all of these are under the umbrella of the National Federation of Women’s Institutes. The NFWI is the largest voluntary organisation for women in the UK and was set up in 1915 and now has over 190,000 members, one of whom was our very own Queen Elizabeth.
Activities
Some of the things that we get up to!
We plant bulbs around Horbury and we litter pick. Some of our member's are part of the West Yorkshire Wombles
Each year we place flower arrangements on the graves of our war heroes
Every month we collect donations for a local food bank and regularly have fund raising events for worthy local causes.
We support one another and have regular health and fitness sessions.
We enjoy all types of experiences from chocolate and wine tasting to spa treatments
Who doesn't love the therapeutic effects of flowers? We have practical classes and floral demonstrations by expert florists
We enjoy all types of crafts from paint pouring, jewellery making, sugar craft to water colour painting and everything in between
We have some very talented members who share their skills with us. We have recently enjoyed card and sugar crafts and a flower arranging evening
We have a stall at the Horbury Show each year in June
We have interesting and inspirational speakers
At our monthly meeting we have tea,coffee and biscuits or cake.
The WI plays a unique role in providing women with educational opportunities and the chance to build new skills, to take part in a wide variety of activities and to campaign on issues that matter to them and their communities.
